CATTLE REARING
Raising cattle for their meat, milk, hides, and other products is known as cattle rearing. When growing cattle, keep the following in mind:
- Feeding: Give your herd a food high in nutrients that is suited to their requirements. Cereals, for instance, can be fed to dairy animals.
- Living conditions: Make sure there is adequate room for grazing, potable water, and thoughtfully constructed shelters.
- Health: Make an appointment with a veterinarian for routine examinations and immunization.
- Breeding: Take into account whether to use artificial insemination, hand breeding, or pasture breeding.
- Weaning: At eight to ten months of age, calves are typically weaned.
- Slaughter: Although they can live up to five years if raised extensively, beef cattle are usually killed in Europe after one to two years.
- Bull calves: Because they compete with heifers for care and management, dairy farms frequently don’t maintain bull calves for very long.
- Herds: More intensive methods and bigger herds are becoming popular.
- Zero grazing: A system in which the cow, which is kept year-round, is fed grass that has been trimmed.
